RS Occupational Health offers Asbestos Medicals, performed by an HSE Appointed Doctor in accordance with The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002.
Where a risk assessment has identified workers who are at risk of exposure to Asbestos then this medical would apply.
The purpose of this medical assessment is to advise about fitness for work with Asbestos, alert employers of the requirement for appropriate respiratory protective equipment or other control measures and to educate asbestos workers of the need to adhere strictly to such safety control measures. The assessment also serves as an opportunity for the individual to participate in the HSE’s asbestos workers research, to discuss the adverse health effects of exposure to asbestos fibres and to highlight the increased risk of related cancers, especially for people who smoke and work with asbestos.
During the medical the individual’s occupational record, medical history and ability to work with such hazardous substances will be assessed. As part of the process a breathing test will also be carried out to assess the worker’s lung function. If the findings at the assessment are satisfactory then the worker would be deemed fit to undertake duties with potential exposure to asbestos and arrangements would be made for the next review which should be no more than 24 months later.
